Colleges and universities throughout the U.S. face many challenges related to financial issues, academic pressures, and addressing the growing social-emotional needs of students. In 2022, the American College Health Association (ACHA) conducted a study involving 54,000 undergraduate college students from diverse backgrounds and identities. The findings revealed that approximately 77% of students reported experiencing psychological distress (ranging from moderate to severe levels).
To address social-emotional challenges, clinical diagnoses and related services may be necessary for some. However, every college student needs to develop essential skills to excel in life. According to the American Psychological Association, there is a correlation between the soft skills that are vital to excelling in the college environment and those imperative for thriving in the post-graduation workplace. By ensuring college students develop foundational social-emotional skills today, they will be better prepared for the future.
